Well this year is certainly a time for celebrating all that is British! The UK will be celebrating two major events this summer. First there is the Queen’s Jubilee, marking 60 years of the Queen’s reign. Secondly we have the 2012 Olympics held in London – the last time the UK held the Olympics was way back in 1948; 64 years ago! The combination of both of these events in 2012 is definitely going to create a surge of UK-wide celebration throughout the summer.
Queen’s Jubilee
To mark 60 years of The Queen’s reign the Diamond Jubilee will centre around an extended weekend in 2012 on 2, 3, 4 and 5 June. Her Majesty The Queen came to the throne on 6 February 1952 and her coronation took place on 2 June 1953. Her Silver Jubilee, marking 25 years on the throne, was celebrated in 1977 and her Golden Jubilee occurred 10 years ago in 2002, marking 50 years on the throne. The 4 days of celebration will certainly be an enjoyable weekend throughout the UK, marked with traditional street parties and local commemorations.
London 2012 Olympics
The 2012 summer Olympics will also take place in London this summer, starting on July 27. The only two previous times that the summer Olympics have taken place in the UK were back in 1948 and 1908. So this too will be a cause for nationwide celebration. The celebrations will start in May, when the Olympic flame relay sees the torch travelling throughout the Channel Islands, England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland continuously for 70 days. You can trace the progress of the torch here. The Olympic flame will come within 10 miles of 95% of people in the UK, Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey. Finally, it will reach London on July the 27th for the opening ceremony, when the big event itself will commence!
