Buying and Taking Care of Your Umbrella Make your choice between convenience and strength. The folding style that slips into a pocket or handbag has fewer ribs but is less robust in strong winds. On the other hand, the conventional stick umbrella may cost more, but it usually withstands the weather and lasts longer. Indeed a good, well cared for umbrella can last many years.
- When opening a PVC umbrella, make sure all the panels are free and not sticking together, before pushing up the slider to open the canopy. Forcing the slider up against sticking PVC panels WILL damage the ribs.
- When the umbrella is wet, shake off any excess water by firmly running the movable part up and down the umbrella shaft. Never shake your umbrella by twisting it around, as this can cause damage to the fabric and the ribs.
- Whichever type you choose, protect it from mildew and rust spots by leaving it open to dry completely before folding it up again.
- Storing it in its outer sleeve will keep it clean and dust-free.
- Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight may cause the colour to fade.
- The fabric should be cleaned using plain water or a white india rubber only. Detergents may remove the proofing of the cover.

| Folding Your Umbrella
- Hold the handle of the umbrella in your left hand so that your thumb and index finger are free. Raise the umbrella, allowing the folds of the material to fall freely.
- With your right hand hold the central fold of each panel, pulling slightly to free any fabric which may be stuck between the ribs. Fold the fabric making sure that each panel is parallel to and at the same distance from the previous one.
- When folding the fabric, hold the folds of each panel in position with your thumb and index finger until all the panels are correctly folded.
- Holding the umbrella firmly with your right hand where all the folds are at the top, rotate and roll up the umbrella with the left hand to ensure that it is tightly rolled. Fasten the strap.

| Umbretiquette
- It's OK to open your umbrella indoors - its only unlucky if you stand under it.
- In China it is lucky to be given an umbrella as a gift.
- The taller person should raise their umbrella when passing in tight quarters.
- If your umbrella has blown inside out more than 6 times, replace it.
- Be very cautious when changing direction with an open umbrella - accidents happen!
- As with all umbrellas, strong gusts may cause damage to the frame. Wind damage does not constitute a faulty frame.
